Puzzled by jargon you don’t speak? Feel like you’ve missed something but don’t know what? Have a look at the list below and before you know it, you’ll be talking BPE and PAGB with the best of them!

5-way battle | A competition between LSAPS and four other local PSs, including Cleveleys & North Fylde. |
Advanced group | The most experienced & skilled photographers in the Society |
AV | Audio visual. The Society has several award winning AV specialists in its number & we hold one AV evening each year, where members involved in this combination of photography, video, voice and music have the opportunity to showcase their work. |
Beginners group | LSAPS members who are new to photography or relatively inexperienced form the Beginners group. |
BPE | British Photographic Exhibitions. LSAPS members may submit entries for inclusion in exhibitions. Inclusion in exhibitions can lead to crown awards (1 to 5), and Associate and Fellowship distinctions (ABPE and FBPE) |
Bebington salon | One of the most successful societies in the north west that holds external competitions under BPE auspices. |
B & W | Black & white – see also ‘mono’. |
Borough | Refers to the Borough of Fylde; and is the section of Photoshow dedicated to images captured at places or events in the Borough. |
Composite | An image that has been made up of more than one photograph and has been manipulated using Photoshop or other software. |
CreARTive | The Society’s competition for ‘altered reality’ images, allowing members to give full vent to their creativity, imagination & image manipulation skills. |
Council | The LSAPS Council is the Society’s executive committee (ie decision making authority). A full list of Council Members can be viewed in the Members Only area of the web-site. |
FIAP | The Federation Internationale de L’Art Photographique - the international organisation to which the PAGB is affiliated, based in Luxembourg. |
Flickr | A Yahoo photography website, free to users, that enables individuals and groups to share their photos across the web, receiving feedback in form of comments from other users. LSAPS has a group on Flickr – see ‘LSAPS photographers’ below. |
Illustrative & Record | One of the competitive sections at Photoshow. This is a section for factual or documentary style images and also includes photojournalism and sport. |
Intermediate | LSAPS ‘middle’ group of photographers who have progressed from Beginners but are not yet achieving advanced photographic standards. |
Jacobs Join | Northern term for a social event or ‘do’. |
Judges | Judges attend meetings to judge internal competitions. They are experienced photographers trained & accredited by the L&CPU. |
Knockout | Internal competition in several rounds during which images are ‘knocked out’ until a winner is found. |
Landscape | An image of the great outdoors. Whilst composites are allowed, the result must produce a recognisable view of the location involved – ie the result cannot be surreal. Landscapes are not close-up photographs. Landscapes may include people or animals but these will not be the main subject of the image. |
Landscape format | One way in which an image is oriented where the width is greater than the height. NB: PDIs are projected in landscape format in club competitions – see also competition rules on resizing of images. |
L&CPU | The Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union. An umbrella group to which LSAPS is affiliated. |
LSAPS | Lytham St Annes Photographic Society. LSAPS is usually pronounced L-saps |
LSAPS Photographers Group (see also Flickr) | LSAPS Photographers Group (see also Flickr). This is the LSAPS group on the Flickr website that enables LSAPS members to share their images and give each other informal feedback. There is a link from the Social Links area of the side-bar, however you have to join Flickr to become part of the group and post images. |
Mono (monochrome) | Monochrome, or mono, is an image produced in a single set of tones such as (but not exclusively) black & white or sepia. |
Nature | A nature photograph captures an image of an animal, insect, bird or plant in its natural habitat. (NB Normally, images of domestic animals or pets are not permitted and nature images may not be manipulated or composites.) The title used must simply be the subject’s correct name (eg mallard duck, iris etc). |
Novice Cup | An L&CPU club competition for members who do not hold any accreditatons or distinctions. |
Open | A competition without a set subject or theme in which composites are permitted. |
PAGB | The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. An association of photographic societies to which LSAPS is affiliated via the L&CPU. |
PDI | Projected digital image. An image which will be projected onto a large screen. |
Photoshow | The annual exhibition held by LSAPS at the end of each season to highlight our work. This is both an exhibition and a competition, involving several different image categories and both Print and PDI entries. |
Portrait | An image of a person or other living thing. |
Portrait format | A way of orienting an image, where the height is greater than the width. In a PDI competition, this will result in a wide black frame being displayed at each side of the image. |
PSA | The Photographic Society of America, to which British societies and individuals may belong. Some judges and guest speakers have PSA qualifications. |

RPS | The Royal Photographic Society - one of the world's oldest photo societies. Offer three levels of Distinction - Licentiate, Associate and Fellowship (LRPS, ARPS and FRPS) |
Southport | Another north west Society which holds an annual BPE exhibition |
Scapes | Similar to Vista, a Scape is an image of a view that could be a Landscape, Seascape, or Cityscape. |
Seaside Invitation | An annual competition between LSAPS and Southport PS. |
Vista | A vista may be a seascape, skyscape or urban/cityscape. LSAPS holds ‘landscape & vistas’ competitions – see also ‘landscape’. |
