2nd Open Digital Competition (2022/23)

The 2nd Open Digital Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 19th January by Harry Emmett (CPAGB) from Accrington Camera Club. Harry commented that the overall standard of the competition was better than he had seen recently, so he avoided very low marks. However he held back relatively few images, resulting in only a small number of high scoring images in the night.

Studio Lighting Workshops

During October and November we held a couple of studio lighting workshops so that LSPAS members could use the club’s equipment and learn a bit about studio lighting. 11 members attended the two sessions, and everyone took turns both as photographer and model. Several Council members were on hand to assist with setting up the kit and to offer guidance and advice. Thanks to Dave Foreman for lending his (ex LSAPS) lighting kit which allowed us to set up two studio sets, and to Sheila Giles for modelling on one of the sets.

2nd Open Print Competition (2022/23)

The second Open Print competition of the season was judged on 15th December by Nick Hilton (DPAGB, BPE5, EFIAP) from Southport PS. He provided a detailed critique on each image and particularly noted where prints were lacking in sharpness in critical areas, or showed areas that were over-exposed.

2022 Seaside Invitation

The annual Seaside Invitation competition against Southport PS was held on Monday 12th December, hosted by Southport. The competition was judged by Robert Millin (MFIAP, FBPE, EFIAP/d2, MPSA, SPSA) who gave a quick but concise judging of each image.

LSAPS were trailing by 11 points after the first Print round, and although we finished ahead in the PDI competition this was not enough to overtake Southport who emerged as overall winners by 5pts. This is only a small margin given the overall scores of 678pts for Southport and 673pts for LSAPS.

Congratulations in particular to Mary Kirkby whose Brave Smile scored 20pts and was judged the best PDI on the night. Also to Gordon Watson who scored 20pts in both the Print and PDI competitions with Catwoman and Father Brown and to Graham Barker who scored 20pts in the PDI competition with Mickelden From Lingmoor Fell.

1st Open Print Competition (2022/23)

The delayed 1st Open Print Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 24th November by Paul King (CPAGB) from North Fylde Photographic Society. There was an entry of 69 images, split evenly between Intermediate and Advanced. Paul mentioned that the general standard was good and gave his comments on what he liked about each image, but only occasionally provided suggestions for improvements.

Carol Watson – Digital Photographer Of The Year

Awards Certificates from the 2021/22 Season and Photowshow 2022 were handed out by over a series of club meetings. Well done to all awarded members, but in particular to Carol Watson who won the Digital Photographer of the Year and keeping it in the family, Gordon Watson who won the Print Photographer of the Year.

1st Set Subject Competition (2022/23) – Naturally Occurring Patterns

The 1st Set Subject Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 17th November by Ove Alexander (CPAGB, BPE1*) from Stockport Photographic Society. The subject was Naturally Occurring Patterns, and there was a wide interpretation of what this actually meant. There was also a large entry of 113 images, however Ove provide a short and clear critique of each image and completed his judgement in good time. He also used a wide range of scores as he thought it important to provide feedback on the relative position of all the images rather than grouping a large number on the same score.

2022 5-Way Battle

The 2022 5-Way Battle was held on Thursday 10th November, hosted by Poulton PS. The competition involves LSAPS, Poulton, Bispham, Garstang and North Fylde, with 15 images being entered from each club. Judge for the evening was Nick Hilton (EFIAP, DPAGB, BPE5) from Southport. Nick provided a good detailed critique of each image and explained why he considered each image warranted a score above or below a ‘standard’ of 15.

At the end of the evening, LSAPS scored 247pts which was slightly up on last year, but once again placed third behind Poulton on 269pts and North Fylde on 258pts. Garstang and Bispham placed 4th and 5th respectively. All the LSAPS image scores are listed below – congratulations to Kuli Virdee who’s image The Old Master achieved a top score of 20pts.

Photowalk To Tockhole Woodland

I had organised two trips to this location covering Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November. Due to a weather forecast of persistent rain on the Sunday morning, which did materialise, I cancelled the Sunday walk. This was so disappointing particularly as we had a clear blue sky on Saturday. On Saturday morning 14 members met in the car park before walking down a dark tree lined avenue. The sun was so low in the sky it pierced the trees only to cast light on the woodland to our right. Our next photo opportunity was taking images of the autumn colours with a stream running through the scene and close up images of the flora. On previous visits I’ve never noticed the fungi on the trees and the woodland floor, but our group certainly found plenty of examples. After a pleasant walk we returned to the car park a little later than I’d planned. I hope the group enjoyed the experience, it’s an area I go back to each autumn.

1st Open Digital Competition (2022/23)

The 1st Open Digital Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 20th October by James Hardy (CPAGB, LRPS, AFIAP) from Chorley Photographic Society. James is also president of the L&CPU. With almost 100 images to judge it was a long night, but James approached the judging with humour. In general he was looking for images that told some sort of a story that made the viewer think, and he commented that a few might be improved by cropping and a few cases where the processing was not adding to the image.
