3rd Set Subject Competition (2024/25) – Film Titles

The 3rd Set Subject competition of the season on the theme of Film Titles was judged on 17th April by Nik Hilton (EFIAP/b DPAGB BPE5*) from Southport PS. Nik pointed out that the competition was a bit of fun, as it showed off people’s imagination in linking to the brief. Nevertheless, he mainly judged the images on their photographic merit.

3rd Open PDI Competition (2024/25)

The 3rd Open PDI competition of the season was judged on 27th March by Diana Magor (APSA, EFIAPb, MPSA, CPAGB, LRPS, BPE3*) from Hoylake Photographic Society. Diana’s comments and suggestions for improvement were clearly stated, if perhaps a little more direct than with most judges, and she used a good range of scores to separate the images.

2025 L&CPU Annual Club Competition

The annual L&CPU Club competition was held on the 1st and 2nd of March at the Eccles Conference Centre. The PDI competition involves 24 images from each club – 16 in Open (Colour or Mono) and 8 in Nature, whilst the Print Competition again involves 24 images, but this time 8 in Open Colour, 8 in Mono and 8 in Nature. Each image is judged by 3 judges, awarding a maximum score of 15pts. In the PDI competition, LSAPS came in 9th place out of 42 clubs, with a total score of 276pts, whilst in the Print competition, LSAPS placed 5th out of 21 clubs with a score of 293pts. Combining both scores together, LSAPS were in a commendable 6th place – two positions down on last year. Chorley PS won both the Print and PDI competitions, and were therefore also in 1st place overall.

In the PDI competition, LSAPS had 10 images that scored 12 or above by Dave Munn, Gordon Watson, Carol Watson, Esther Parkinson, Margaret Keane and Sheila Giles, whilst in the Print Competition 17 images achieved this score, by Martin Christensen, Carol Watson, Gordon Watson, Brian Clark, Sheila Giles, Mike Williamson, Peter Darby, Chris Taylor and Mary Kirkby. Congratulations to Gordon Watson who’s A Pretty Penny scored a maximum 15 pts in the print section.

2nd Set Subject Competition (2024/25) – Street Photography

The 2nd Set Subject competition of the season on the theme of Street Photography was judged on 20th February. The judge for the evening was Steve Hitchen (EPAGB, AFIAP, BPE5*) who is a member of 3 clubs – Atherton & District PS, The Evolve Group and the sRGB Photo Group. This was a print competition and with fewer entries than we have seen recently, it made for a more relaxed evening of judging. Steve made a few comments about some images being ‘well seen’ and also suggested where some distractions could be cloned out, or at least toned down.

2nd Open PDI Competition (2024/25)

The 2nd Open PDI competition of the season was judged on 23rd January by James Hardy (CPAGB, LRPS, AFIAP, Hon LCPU) from Chorley Photographic Society. With 90 images to get through it was quite a long night as James provided good comments on each image, including recommendations on cropping out unnecessary sky and foreground areas and not over-enlarging wildlife images to preserve quality.

2nd Open Print Competition (2024/25)

The 2nd Open Print competition of the season was judged on 9th January by Nick Berentzen (CPAGB, BPE3) from South Manchester Camera Club. Nick worked his way steadily through the images providing mostly positive comments. He stated that he thought the standards were high, resulting in a large number of images being held back, which then required some adjustment of scores to separate the images.

2024 Seaside Invitation

The annual Seaside Invitation competition against Southport PS was held on Monday 9th December, hosted by Southport. The competition was judged by Tilman Kleinhans (ARPS, EFIAP/g, DPAGB, BPE5*, Hon LCPU) from St Helens Photographic Society. A few LSAPS members attended on the night and were rewarded with a good selection of images to view, as well as mince pies and cakes from Southport.

This year the competition was split into 15 prints and 25 PDI from each club, with 2 images allowed from each member in Print, but only one per member in PDI. The print competition was close fought with Southport finishing just 3 points ahead, however LSAPS established a strong lead of 33 points in the PDI competition resulting in an overall win for LSAPS by 697pts against Southport on 675pts.

Congratulations in particular to Bill Breckenridge and Carol Watson who each scored 20pts in the print section and to Esther Parkinson, Gordon Watson, Mike Williamson and Peter Flegg who all scored 20pts in the Digital Competition.

1st Set Subject Competition (2024/25) – On The Beach

The 1st  Set Subject competition of the season was judged on 21st October by Colin Douglas, who returned just a week after judging the 4-Way Battle. Colin had a difficult task of separating 73 variations of beach scenes, however he managed to run through all the images in the first half, then judged the fairly large number of held back images after the break.

The top scoring images are listed below.

2024 L&CPU Knock-Out Competition

The annual L&CPU Knock-Out competition was held on 16th November at the Elmbank Conference Centre in Eccles, judged by Mike Sharples (ARPS, MPAGB) from Smethwick PS in the Midlands Federation. Each club entered 8 images, however as 35 clubs took part, the number of images entered into the judging was reduced to just 5 images per club, giving 175 images to be judged on the night. Mike gave a brief comment on each image, and knocked out over 100 images in the first pass. After that he seemed more reluctant to knock out some very fine images, and it was only after the 7th round that he had whittled it down to just 9 images, at which point he selected his overall winner.

Scores are awarded based on the round at which an image was eliminated, and the overall competition was won by Chorley with a score of 29pts. LSAPS finished a very creditable 5th on 20pts. The winning image was a Mono Architectural shot titled Pet Armadillo by David Boam from North Cheshire PS.

Congratulations to Chris Taylor, who’s Sparrow Hawk was the last LSAPS image standing, making it to Round 6. LSAPS results and images are shown below, whilst a gallery of all images reaching at least the second round is available on the L&CPU portal (note you must be registered on the portal and logged in to view the link):-

2024 4-Way Battle

The 2024 4-Way Battle was held on Thursday 15th November, hosted by LSAPS and judged by Colin Douglas (ARPS, AFIAP, DPAGB, BPE4). There was a good attendance from the four clubs – LSAPS, Poulton, Garstang and North Fylde. As Colin judged each image, the author and club were announced for those scoring 18 or above. By the half-way point it was evident that LSAPS were slipping somewhat behind as none of our images were announced.

In the second half, LSAPS fared better with 5 images scoring 18 or above, however when the results were announced we were in a disappointing 4th place with 334pts. The competition was won by Poulton with 353pts, followed by North Fylde on 344pts, narrowly beating Garstang on 343pts.
