2023 Dublin Inter-Club Competition

Fleetwood Coastwatch Station By Ian Mulroy

On Thursday 27th April we hosted an inter-Club competition against Dublin CC. This was a return match following a competition hosted last year by Dublin, which Dublin won by just 3 points. It was great to see so many members from both clubs joining in on Zoom and I’m sure all who joined would agree it was an enjoyable evening. Our judge for the night was Rob Hockney LRPS DPAGB BPE5*, the current president of the L&CPU. Rob was impressed by the standard of the entries, given that all the entries were from different authors and he said that it demonstrated a great strength in depth from both clubs.

It was a very close fought competition and at the break it was all square. It was still all square when we just had the held back images to review. At the end of the night LSAPS won by just 1 point with a score of 422pts against Dublin’s 421pts, so it really couldn’t have been closer. Well done to our members who had images held back; Dave Biggs, Chris Round, Elaine Cook, Carol Watson and particularly Ian Mulroy, who’s image “Fleetwood Coastwatch Station” was Rob’s favourite on the night.

LSAPS scores are shown below.

2022 Seaside Invitation

The annual Seaside Invitation competition against Southport PS was held on Monday 12th December, hosted by Southport. The competition was judged by Robert Millin (MFIAP, FBPE, EFIAP/d2, MPSA, SPSA) who gave a quick but concise judging of each image.

LSAPS were trailing by 11 points after the first Print round, and although we finished ahead in the PDI competition this was not enough to overtake Southport who emerged as overall winners by 5pts. This is only a small margin given the overall scores of 678pts for Southport and 673pts for LSAPS.

Congratulations in particular to Mary Kirkby whose Brave Smile scored 20pts and was judged the best PDI on the night. Also to Gordon Watson who scored 20pts in both the Print and PDI competitions with Catwoman and Father Brown and to Graham Barker who scored 20pts in the PDI competition with Mickelden From Lingmoor Fell.

The 2022 5-Way Battle was held on Thursday 10th November, hosted by Poulton PS. Nick provided a good detailed critique of each image and explained why he considered each image warranted a score above or below a ‘standard’ of 15.

At the end of the evening, LSAPS scored 247pts which was slightly up on last year, but once again placed third behind Poulton on 269pts and North Fylde on 258pts. 17 Clubs submitted a full entry and LSAPS came 12th in Mono and a very creditable 2nd  in Colour for an overall position of equal 5th. The competition was won by Chorley, who placed 1st in both categories.

2022 North Cheshire Challenge

Father Brown By Gordon Watson

The North Cheshire Challenge is organised by the North Cheshire Photographic Society and usually consists of two competitions held over a weekend – an interclub print competition and an interclub Digital Knock-out competition. The latter took place on Friday night on Zoom, judged by Terry Donnelly.

In a knock-out competition, about half the images are removed in each round until at round 5 only a few remain and the judge chooses their overall winner. Points are then awarded for the round which an image reaches – 1pt for the first round, 2 pts for the second etc.

Those of us that Zoomed in were treated to a really high standard of images from the 21 Clubs taking part. Terry did a great job judging the competition and provided some excellent and detailed critique. LSAPS finished in a very commendable 5th place with a score of 14pts – congratulations to Kuli Virdee and Gordon Watson whose images reached the 4th round. Southport PS and Wigan 10 shared the top spot on 18pts and Trevor Davenport of Southport had the top image of the night.

Unfortunately there were insufficient entries from the clubs to run the print competition.

Dublin Inter-Club Competition

Kingfisher With Catch By Kuli Virdee

On Tuesday 25th January LSAPS took part in an inter-club competition against Dublin Camera Club. This competition followed on from last year’s Photoshow PDI competition, which was judged by Dublin club member Pauric McGroder.  Pauric thought that LSAPS would be a good match for Dublin, so we agreed to hold a competition. The format was for 30 images, including between 5 and 10 Mono and Nature images, with no club member being represented more than twice.

The judge was Ann Francis (FIPF, EFIAP/g) from Cork Camera Group, and after a close competition, Dublin were the narrow winners with a score of 486pts against 483pts for LSAPS.

LSAPS scores and images are shown below. Congratulations to Kuli Virdee whose Kingfisher With Catch was the highest placed LSAPS image with a score of 19.
