The annual L&CPU Knock-Out competition was held on 16th November at the Elmbank Conference Centre in Eccles, judged by Mike Sharples (ARPS, MPAGB) from Smethwick PS in the Midlands Federation. Each club entered 8 images, however as 35 clubs took part, the number of images entered into the judging was reduced to just 5 images per club, giving 175 images to be judged on the night. Mike gave a brief comment on each image, and knocked out over 100 images in the first pass. After that he seemed more reluctant to knock out some very fine images, and it was only after the 7th round that he had whittled it down to just 9 images, at which point he selected his overall winner.

Scores are awarded based on the round at which an image was eliminated, and the overall competition was won by Chorley with a score of 29pts. LSAPS finished a very creditable 5th on 20pts. The winning image was a Mono Architectural shot titled Pet Armadillo by David Boam from North Cheshire PS.

The 2024 4-Way Battle was held on Thursday 15th November, hosted by LSAPS and judged by Colin Douglas (ARPS, AFIAP, DPAGB, BPE4). There was a good attendance from the four clubs – LSAPS, Poulton, Garstang and North Fylde. As Colin judged each image, the author and club were announced for those scoring 18 or above. By the half-way point it was evident that LSAPS were slipping somewhat behind as none of our images were announced.

In the second half, LSAPS fared better with 5 images scoring 18 or above, however when the results were announced we were in a disappointing 4th place with 334pts. The competition was won by Poulton with 353pts, followed by North Fylde on 344pts, narrowly beating Garstang on 343pts.

The 2024 North Cheshire Challenge was held on Saturday 25th May on Zoom, judged by Christine Widdall. The format is a knock-out club competition, with each club entering 5 images. In a knock-out, about 50% of the images are knocked out in a series of round until only a handful remain, at which point the judge chooses an overall winner. Scores are awarded based on the round at which an image is knocked out, and the club with the highest total score wins.

There were 120 images entered from 24 clubs. LSAPS scored 8 points and came 15^th equal whilst Chorley PS won with 22 points and the winning image was by Chris Woods from Southport PS, a lovely shot of ponies on Stokksnes beach in Iceland.

The inter-Club competition against Dublin CC was held on Tuesday 30th April on Zoom, hosted by Dublin. The competition originated when one of the Dublin members was asked to judge our Photoshow 3 years ago, and consists of 25 images from each club, all by different members. The judge for the competition was Rory O’Connor (FIPF, AFIAP) from the Blarney Photography Club. Rory’s comments were very brief and he ran through the complete set of 50 images in just under 1 hour. Interestingly he did not award any image the top score of 20pts, and there were just two images scoring 19pts – one from each club.

The competition was close, however Dublin ended up as winners, scoring 415pts to LSAPS score of 408pts.

Each club entered 8 images, however as 40 clubs took part, the number of images entered into the judging was reduced to just 4 images per club, giving 160 images to be judged on the night. Images were knocked out in a series of rounds, until just 5 images were left, at which point the judge chose his overall winner. Club scores are based on the round at which an image was eliminated.

The overall competition was won by Wigan 10 with a score of 20pts, however LSAPS placed a very creditable 3rd equal on 18pts. The winning image was by Brianna Gilligan, who at just 14years of age was probably the youngest entrant.

The 2023 4-Way Battle was held on Wednesday 15th November, hosted by North Fylde PS, but held in Poulton. The competition involves LSAPS, Poulton, Garstang and North Fylde, with 20 images being entered from each club. Judge for the evening was Steve Proctor ( DPAGB, BPE5, PPSA) from both Chorley and Ribblesdale Photographic Societies. Steve provided a good detailed critique of each image and explained why an image might score lower in an inter-club competition when up against stronger images than it might score in an internal club competition.

At the end of the evening, LSAPS scored 329pts which placed us in 3rd place, behind Poulton on 357pts, North Fylde on 344pts, with Garstang in 4th place on 314pts. The first L&CPU competition of the season, the “Bob Robinson Trophy” (formerly the Novice Cup), took place on Sunday 8th October. This competition is designed to promote competitions and distinctions to club members who generally do not participate in competitions and who do not hold any qualifications or accreditations (e.g. LRPS, CPAGB or BPE Crowns).  This year the format of the competition was in the form of a digital knock out, with just a single Open section, judged by Nick Hilton from Southport PS.

The competition was won by Stalybridge with 34 points, whilst LSAPS came joint 7th on 29 points, out of 23 competing clubs. LSAPS results and images are shown below. Congratulations to Bill Breckenridge, whose Northern Goshawk made it to the 7th and final round.
