The 2021 Seaside Invitation

The Seaside Invitation competition against Southport PS was held on Thursday 9th December, hosted by LSAPS. The competition was judged by Adrian Lines (MPAGB, AFBPE, AFIAP) who provided a number of feedback points such as cropping to either give space to the subject or cropping close to create some tension, and attention to small points of detail like highlights, distracting elements or slight halos around objects.

LSAPS were trailing slightly after the first Print round, but came out ahead after the PDI round, with a total score of 674pts against Southport’s 666pts.

Congratulations to Carol Watson whose Vestrahorn Reflections was the only LSAPS print to score 20pts, and to Bill Breckenridge, Kuli Virdee and Gordon Watson who all scored 20pts in the PDI competition.

2021 5-Way Battle

Dickensian by Kuli Virdee

The 2021 5-Way Battle was held on Tuesday 23rd November, hosted by Garstang PS on Zoom. The competition involves LSAPS, Poulton, Bispham, Garstang and North Fylde, with 15 images being entered from each club. Judge for the evening was Erica Oram from Sheffield, who judged our Photoshow a couple of years ago. Erica provided good detailed critique of each image to justify the scores.

At the end of the evening, LSAPS scored 242pts which placed us in third place by just one point behind North Fylde, with Poulton winning with 255pts. Garstang and Bispham placed 4th and 5th respectively. All the LSAPS image scores are listed below – congratulations to Kuli Virdee and Gordon Watson, who each scored a maximum 20pts for one of their images.

2021 L&CPU Knock-Out Competition

All At Sea by Gordon Watson

The 2021 L&CPU Knock-Out competition was held on Saturday13th November, judged by John Cartlidge APAGB, EFIAP/p, BPE5* from the Midland Counties Photographic Federation. 41 clubs entered, with 4 images from each club. Images are progressively knocked out in a series of rounds, until only a handful are left, at which point the judge selects his overall winner. Scores are awarded for the round reached by each image. All images in the Knock-Out competition must be new to L&CPU competitions.

LSAPS scored a notable success, coming in second equal place, tied with Nelson and Kendal and just one point behind winners Southport. Of LSAPS 4 entries,  Justin’s Camels in Wadi Rum was knocked out in the first round and Carol’s Money, Money Money in the second. However Kuli’s Proud Soldier reached the sixth round and Gordon’s All At Sea reached the seventh and final round, giving LSAPS a score of 16pts.

2021 L&CPU Novice Cup

Waiting His Turn by Peter Cotton

The 2021 Novice Cup took place on Sunday 10th October, the first L&CPU print competition since March 2020!

21 Clubs took part and LSAPS did very well in the Mono Section, finishing in joint 1st place alongside South Manchester CC. Congratulations to Peter Cotton who received a Commended for his print “Waiting His Turn“. Unfortunately we didn’t do so well in the Colour Section, finishing in 12th place. This section was won by North Cheshire PS and Heswall PS. The overall winners of the Cup were Bebington PS with a score of 283 and LSAPS finished 10th with a score of 271.

Note that the Novice Cup is to be renamed, recognising that it is not just for novices and will now be known as the Bob Robinson Cup, in honour of the late L&CPU President.

The Bury Battle

On Thursday 17th June we held an invitation competition against Bury PS. This promised to be a close fought competition as Bury had finished very close to LSAPS in the L&CPU inter-club competition. The competition was hosted by Bury and judged by Joe Houghton from Dublin Camera Club, who stepped in at the last minute when the previous judge became unavailable.

After a close fought competition of high quality images, Lytham ran out the close winners, with 457pts against Bury’s 452pts. Of particular note, all three top placed images were by Lytham members, so congratulations to Keith Orr, Graham Barker and especially Martin Christen who’s Morning Light On The Old Man Of Storr was the top placed image.

2021 L&CPU Club Print Championship

Pearls By Kuli Virdee

Judging of the 2021 L&CPU Club Print Championship took place on Saturday 27th March. Due to Covid restrictions this was a postal A4 print competition and judging was performed by Phil and Gwen Charnock who were sent the prints in advance, which they then scored jointly out of 20.

The field was much smaller than in the PDI competition, with only 12 clubs entering a full set of images. LSAPS matched our result in the PDI competition, placing 6th overall with 382 pts (6th in Colour, 3rd in Mono and 8th in Nature). Once again this is a good improvement on last year’s 10th place, and even though the field was smaller, the better L&CPU clubs were still represented, and it requires more good images to do well in both Print and PDI competitions.

Overall winners were Chorley PS with 420pts.

LSAPS scores are shown below – congratulations in particular to Kuli Virdee who scored a maximum 20pts for his image Pearls.

2021 L&CPU Club PDI Championship

Rhizostome Jellyfish And A Juvenile Jack By Graham Barker

Judging of the 2021 L&CPU Club PDI Championship took place on Saturday 20th March. Due to Covid restrictions the judging was performed in advance by Phil and Gwen Charnock who were given the images for review which they then scored jointly out of 20. This is different to normal years where there are three judges who only see the images projected for a few seconds, and who each score independently out of 5.

LSAPS did very well scoring 394pts, placing 4th equal in the Open competition and 10th equal in the Nature competition for an overall placing of 6th out of 40 clubs. This is a good improvement on last year’s 11th place, mainly due to a better showing in the Nature competition.

Overall winners were Oldham PS with 415pts, who narrowly beat Chorley by just 2 points.

Congratulations in particular to Graham Barker who scored a maximum 20pts with his Rhizostome Jellyfish and Juvenile Jack.

Judging of the Print Competition will be held on Saturday 27th March.
