The 3rd Set Subject Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 20th April by Graham Currey, familiar to many LSAPS members from his character photo shoots. The subject was Power and there was a large entry of over 100 Prints and PDI’s with a wide interpretation of the subject. This led to a long evening finishing after 10pm.

The top scoring images are listed below. The featured image for this competition is Flame Power by Mary Kirkby, which scored 20pts in the Print competition.

Liverpool Photo Walk

Liverpool Sign by Martin Round

The Liverpool waterfront photo walk took place on Sunday 26th March. We met up on the bridge crossing Princes Dock and made our way along the bank of the Mersey to the Pier Head. On the way we passed HMS Portland moored at the Liverpool Cruise terminal berth. The Pier Head was busy and  I had failed to notice when arranging the event that the Liverpool half marathon and 10 miler event were starting and finishing in front of the Three Graces. The area was awash with runners and spectators alike entertained by the Batala Mersey Samba Reggae Drumming Band who put on a marathon display themselves.

Needless to say we opted for a more relaxing stroll around the waterfront, dodging the runners (literally!), to take images of the buildings and the activities taking place. Having started sunny, the clouds did appear but at least it stayed fine and we managed to get images of the old and new buildings around the docks, soe of which are shown below.

A couple of the group spent an hour or so on the Mersey Ferry and, as we went our separate ways at 1pm, a number stayed on to explore other parts of Liverpool. There’s always plenty to see. The next photo walk will take place on Wednesday 19th April at Scout Scar near Kendal.

The 3rd Open Digital Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 16th March by Adrian Hendley (CPAGB) of Ilkley Camera Club. Adrian provided careful and considered feedback on each image, but pointed out several times that it was up to the photographer how they presented their image – something that is worth remembering.

The top scoring images are listed below. The featured image for this competition is House At Wreck End by Brian Cackett,  which scored 20pts in the Beginner Group.

2nd Set Subject Competition (2022/23) – Monochrome

The 2nd Set Subject Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 16th February by Tom Richardson (ARPS, EFIAP/p, ABPE, DPAGB) from Poulton Photographic Society. The subject was Mono, and there was a bumper entry with 126 images (print and PDI) to view. Tom kept his comments necessarily brief, but gave some good advice, particularly about proofing different mono image tones when printing, and being sure to address noise issues with noise reduction software. Although he used a wide range of scores, only 6 images were held back in each category to receive the highest scores.

The top scoring images are listed below. The featured image for this competition is Pia Bunny by Anthon Hull, which scored 20pts in the PDI competition.

Delamere Forest Photo Walk

LSAPS Members at Delamere Forest

Delamere Forest Photo Walk – On Saturday 11th February, a few LSAPS photographers visited Delamere Forest in Cheshire. Having arrived for 10am we walked through the woodland heading off the main path to find the more photogenic pools of water. These peat pools contain very dark peaty water with decaying tree trucks poking out or laying across the water. It’s an unusual sight. For the majority of our visit the sky was overcast but, for a few fleeting moments the sun shone through gaps in the clouds and spread a beautiful warm glow across the landscape. It transformed the scene. If only we could have been blessed with this light for the whole of our visit. Fortunately, we were at a pools taking pictures during the few moments the light was at its best not walking between locations. We spend the last 20 minutes of our 4 hour visit relaxing over a drink before heading home to review the images.

2nd Open Digital Competition (2022/23)

The 2nd Open Digital Competition of the 2022/3 season was judged on 19th January by Harry Emmett (CPAGB) from Accrington Camera Club. Harry commented that the overall standard of the competition was better than he had seen recently, so he avoided very low marks. However he held back relatively few images, resulting in only a small number of high scoring images in the night.

The top scoring images are listed below. The featured image for this competition is Concentration by Eric Craven which scored 20pts in the Intermediate Group.

Studio Lighting Workshops

Sheila Giles by Esther Parkinson

During October and November we held a couple of studio lighting workshops so that LSPAS members could use the club’s equipment and learn a bit about studio lighting. 11 members attended the two sessions, and everyone took turns both as photographer and model. Several Council members were on hand to assist with setting up the kit and to offer guidance and advice. Thanks to Dave Foreman for lending his (ex LSAPS) lighting kit which allowed us to set up two studio sets, and to Sheila Giles for modelling on one of the sets.

2nd Open Print Competition (2022/23)

The second Open Print competition of the season was judged on 15th December by Nick Hilton (DPAGB, BPE5, EFIAP) from Southport PS. He provided a detailed critique on each image and particularly noted where prints were lacking in sharpness in critical areas, or showed areas that were over-exposed.

The top scoring images are listed below. The featured image is Gerbera by Elaine Cook which scored 20pts in the Intermediate Section.
